Fun Ways to Teach Your Child about Calendars

January is a time for new things and goal setting for ourselves and even our kids.  One fun activity to start this year is a Daily Calendar with your child.  The amount of knowledge that a child can learn from interacting with a calendar is quite surprising.  Even before your child is reading, a calendar can encourage a child to build literacy skills and math skills in a fun and engaging way.  In just a few minutes a day your child can learn them following skills.

Skills Learned with Calendars

  • Days of the Week
  • Months of the Year
  • Number Recognition
  • Numerical Order
  • Pattern with color and shapes
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Sequencing
  • Time

Depending on your child’s age just start with the basics of days and numbers and build a calendar together.  Make a point each day to spend 5 minutes adding the number of the day to the calendar and change the day of the week.  While you’re doing Calendar Math you can practice identifying the number and practice counting objects to match that number.  Before you know, they’ll surprise you with how much they remember.
