Construction Worker Pretend Play Prompt

(This pretend play prompt brought to you by guest blogger Joyce of Childhood Beckons.)

Pretend play is an important part of childhood. When children are pretending, storytelling, and role playing they are learning a myriad of skills. I try my best to encourage pretend play and one of my favorite ways is to set up a pretend play prompt.

This construction worker play prompt was a fun success! I began by creating an inviting space for my son to play and explore. I kept it simple and set out some blocks, play dough, craft sticks, toothpicks and dried beans on our train table. Then I built a road that ran around the table, allowing his Melissa & Doug Wooden Construction Vehicles Set to travel to all of the various construction sites. I finished off the invitation to play with his Melissa & Doug Construction Worker Role Play Costume Set and a printable.

I created and laminated this work order printable so he could use it repeatedly to draw and check off the jobs he completes. If you like this printable, feel free to save and print for your own construction fun!

He was thrilled when he saw his surprise and immediately got to work. He constructed tall towers and houses with the blocks. He used his vehicles for demolitions and rock pushing. He used his tools, built structures, and ran his trucks through the play dough. And each time he completed another job, he marked it off his list!

More Ways to Play:

  • Start with story time! Read a construction themed book together before you let your little builder loose.
  • Fix simple household items. Take apart a flash light, a cell phone, or a watch and have your child put it back together again.
  • Take a lunch break! Make a bagged lunch for your child to take with them to work.
  • Set up a digging patch. It doesn’t have to be dirt! Use dried beans, pasta, or even cloud dough. This Melissa & Doug Trailer and Excavator Wooden Vehicle Play Set would make a fun addition to any digging patch.

What is your favorite way to encourage pretend play?
