This educational idea is brought to you by Melissa & Doug , written by our Blog Ambassador Allison McDonald. “Everyday play is what childhood should be about.”

Sometimes all it takes is a great imagination, but sometimes you need some sparkle! My daughter loves her Melissa & Doug Princess Role Play Costume ( so much in fact it’s all she wants to wear for Halloween ) but even the best costume need some kid made sparkle. Making their own accessories is a great way of boosting confidence and taking ownership of their own play .

This necklace is mess free and doesn’t use traditional beads so even toddlers can make it.

Start with some sparkly foam, wired ribbon scissors and some painter’s tape.

Cut the sparkly foam into rectangles large enough to fold in two.

Tape the wired ribbon to a table, it will help keep the ribbon stable for fumbly little fingers.

Peel the backing off the sparkly foam. and place it under the ribbon.

Invite your child to come and fold each “jewel ” in two sandwiching it around the ribbon.

Tie. Make it large enough to fit over your child’s head. Because you have made it with wired ribbon you can adjust it easily once it’s on.

Time to play!
