Arr, mateys! We’d be scurvy to miss wishing ya a HAPPY TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY! Enjoy a day filled with giggles and pretend-play fun as you try out some of our favorite pirate words and sayings.
A PIRATE PRIMER FROM BARNACLE BART
Ahoy – hello!
Aye – yes
Booty – treasure
Bounty – reward
Buccaneer – another word for pirate
Hornswaggle – to cheat
Jolly Roger – the pirate flag (skull and crossbones)
Maroon – to leave all alone (on a desert island, for instance)
Matey – shipmate, fellow crew member, or friend
Old salt – a longtime sailor
Shiver me timbers – I’m surprised!
Shanty – a song to sing at sea
Walk the plank – to be forced off the ship
And of course, there’s “Arrr!” Say this to start a sentence, end a sentence, or pass the time between pirate conversations. You can use all of these words to help make up a pirate story, or just swagger round the “deck” and be guided by your own inner cap’n!
We hope this day is filled with shanties and good times with yer mateys!
