Honor Counselor Bernadette’s Camp Journal: Olympic Triathlon

 
Camp Sunny Patch honor counselor Bernadette puts a cool  twist on our  Session 9 activity, Triathlon!

Hello there! I am Bernadette from Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas and right now at my house the Olympics have taken center stage. My girls (age 6 and 5) have been watching the Olympics for the first time this summer and they are really enjoying the swimming, gymnastics and bicycle races. I wanted to tap into the Olympic frenzy and set up a kid friendly triathlon inspired by the Camp Sunny Patch Triathlon during Session 9.  You can download the printable directions here for the original version of this activity.

We tailored our triathlon to suit what the girls wanted to do – race each other in the pool, on bikes and finally on foot. So we grabbed our Melissa & Doug Spark Shark Kickboards and headed to the pool for Part 1 of our triathlon.

The swimmers got into the pool, loosened up and got ready to race! It was an exciting race, you can see the determination on their little faces. This was serious stuff!

Using the kickboards the girls swam the length of the pool.  Our victor was overjoyed at having beat out her big sister, that doesn’t happen often. What a great olympic story!

Part 2 of our triathlon took us back on land for the bicycle and foot races. We combined them for an action pack finish to our triathlon. The girls started the bicycle race at our starting line, which was clearly marked with our Melissa & Doug Activity Cones. The cones also marked the halfway point, where the girls had to quickly dump their bikes and set off immediately on the foot race to the finish.

Once on their bikes, the girls were off. It was a fast paced race but our victor pulled ahead in the last few seconds.

It was a close foot race to the finish line but our victor was incredibly proud to even out the score with her little sister who beat her in the pool.

What a fun and action packed triathlon! It was such a wonderful (and interactive) way to expose my girls to the olympic games. This activity has certainly made them even more excited about the Olympics. We are looking forward to watching the rest of the summer games together.

Who knows, I might even have my very own future Olympian.
