Camp Sunny Patch Session 11: Garden Bug Hunt

Camp Sunny Patch is all about hosting your very own summer camp . . . so when it’s time to go exploring, your own backyard is the perfect place!

I have heard from many families that the kids love looking for bugs, but the parents are squeamish or worried about real bugs being too tricky for fumbly little fingers. That is why this garden bug hunt activity is perfect. You can still go searching for the real thing but use the fun plastic bugs for the hunt.

You will need something to put your bugs in (a mayo jar with holes punched in the lid or perhaps a super cool bug house like this one), a bag of bugs (we used a sack of snakes too), a magnifying glass and some cool explorer dress-up clothes too.

Hide your bugs all over your garden. I usually placed them in small pockets of 2 or 3, so it was challenging to find them but was a great reward to find a few at once.

When all are found, it’s time to count, sort and group them. You can sort them by shape, color or location (did you find them on the ground or in a bush/tree?).

Repeat. (Trust me they will want to repeat it over and over again!)

My children are having so much fun doing these activities! They are excited for the time to ‘play’ Camp at home! I hope that your little bird(s) enjoy as much as mine!

  2. We have all these for my daughter… loves plastic bugs, her bug catcher and magnifying glass – that she named ‘Sammy’… haha… but she likes to try catching ‘live’ stuff and putting it in her bug catcher… love ALL ‘Melissa and Doug’ stuff…
